The press center of the Russian Academy of Sciences has reported that on May 27th, 2026, the Sun-Terahertz scientific instrumentation created by the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences staff was installed on the outer surface of the service module of the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS).
The installation was carried out by cosmonauts Sergei Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev during spacewalk.
The Sun-Terahertz space experiment, conducted by the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will last for three years from 2026 to 2029. The main goal is to study the Sun in the terahertz radiation range.
Vladimir S. Makhmutov, the project manager and the Head of the Laboratory of Solar and Cosmic-ray Physics, has informed that in the several weeks, the necessary verification of the equipment and software complex for processing experimental data in space will be completed. Then it will be possible to begin analyzing the data received from the device.
Terahertz radiation is registered using eight photometers. Each of them includes a Golay detector, Low Pass and Band Pass Filters manufactured by our company.
